LIAM

This room is a fucking nightmare. If it weren’t for Nate and Ben coming today, I’d gladly have stayed confined to the silence of my 6 by 8 foot cell.

After one last night spent in the infirmary, they put me back in a cell this morning. A different one, though. Mason called yesterday, telling me I’d be put in solitary. As if that’s going to change anything in the long run. At best, I’ll be kept away from the bunch of pussies that beat me to oblivion until I’ve fully recovered. And what will happen then? Maybe a remake I’ll never wake up from. Who knows? Not me. Just like I don’t know why it happened in the first place.

A woman laughs a couple of tables over, and I’m instantly daydreaming of imploring her to shut the fuck up with her twangy voice.

Besides her, it’s not that people are overly loud, but there are too many of them talking a mile a minute, as if that could make up for lost time. It’s a damn good thing that my skull quit pounding from the blows it suffered four days ago. My ribs are a different story, but at least the ruckus around me can’t make that pain worse.

People are still coming in, and it’s a surprise to spot my sister rushing toward me, Cody towering over her as he follows her close. Since physical contacts have to be kept at a minimum, Alex hugs me briefly, which is a good thing considering how tight her embrace is.

Cracked ribs and all that.

“Hey, baby sis. Thought Nate and Ben were coming today,” I say. “Everything okay?”

“It’s you I should ask that,” she replies, sitting down while studying my injured face and watching me give Cody a quick hug.

My bruises have faded just a little, but a colorful patchwork of blue, red and purple is still marring my skin as proof of what happened, as well as my cut eyebrow arch and lip.

“I’m alright. Told you that on the phone, sweetheart,” I remind her.

“Just so I wouldn’t worry.”

That’s partly true.

“I’m good. Barely feel anything,” I promise her.

That’s completely untrue.

“Let’s pretend I believe you,” she retorts with sarcasm. “I came today because I wanted to see you, and because there’s something you need to know.”

With a note of warning in his tone, Cody adds, “But you need to keep your cool. No need to bring attention to yourself, alright?”

They found something. I’m not even surprised that Alex knows. Pretty sure she’s threatened Jayce countless times with painful punishment if he dared keep anything from her.

“What did you find?”

“It’s not about—” Cody starts, but Alex pipes in.

“It’s about Erin.”

Her name in my ears has the power to turn off every irksome sound in the room. All that’s left is the rush of my blood through my veins and the dread in my chest as I read the worry on my sister’s face.

“Is she hurt?” My fists clenching on the table help channeling the fear and anger spreading through me despite not knowing what happened.
